Discover the hundreds of churches founded in the Anglo-Saxon period

This map shows the hundreds of churches across the North of England whose stories go back to the Anglo-Saxon period. Almost all of the buildings have evolved considerably over time, and some have been completely rebuilt. However, we can often still find carved stones or other traces of that extraordinary period of church growth which transformed individuals and shaped the culture and landscape of the North.

You can search this map in several ways. You can use it to find individual or groups of churches to visit, or to explore the history of your community. The entries for churches are still being developed but often you will find a short history of the church and links to information about its life today. Where there are remaining traces of the Anglo-Saxon art and architecture, you can click on links to a website providing images and further information.
