In c.627 St PaulinusPaulinus, St Bishop of York 627-644. Sent to England with Saint Augustine. Accompanied Queen Ethelburga north on her marriage to King Edwin of Northumbria. A church probably existed by the 8th century as there were royal weddings at Catterick in 762 and 792, showing it was a place of some regional importance. The current church dates from the early 15th century but a small piece of 9th-century carved stone was re-used in the building, and other pieces of crosses from the 9th or 10th century have been found.
