Evidence of the early medieval importance of this site comes from the large collection of 10th century carved stone crosses which are found here, amongst the most impressive in the entire north of England. Many show carved figures of people, one with birds on his shoulders, and which may depict local donors and patrons of the church. One fragment shows a stag and a dog in a way which has been linked to Irish carving of the period. Several of the best crosses are now in Stockton Museum, although the church has plaster-cast replicas on display.
